MINI-SYMPOSIA

Frequency-comb Spectroscopy

Organized by Aleksandra Foltynowicz (Umeå University), Nathalie Picqué (Max-Planck Institute of Quantum Optics), and Jun Ye (JILA, University of Colorado)

New frequency-comb-based experimental techniques and spectroscopy results, from gas-phase to condensed-phase, are showcased with an emphasis on intriguing applications that advance the frontiers of chemical physics. Invited Speakers: Kjeld Eikema (Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam), Paolo De Natale (National Institute of Optics-CNR, Florence) Greg Rieker (University of Colorado, Boulder), Takeshi Yasui (University of Tokushima)

New Ways of Understanding Molecular Spectra

Organized by Per Jensen (University of Wuppertal) and Stephan Schlemmer (University of Cologne)

Recent years have seen a number of new and alternative approaches to the interpretation of molecular spectra. They range very widely. At one end, there are heavily computational methods, involving the direct numerical solution of the molecular Schrödinger equation or the replacement of the efforts of the spectroscopist to fit spectra to ever sophisticated models by artificial intelligence. At the other end, there are almost computer-free methods, such as the algebraic approach, aiming at alternative parameterizations of the effective molecular Hamiltonian. We would like to bring together protagonists from these diverse fields in the hope of fostering discussion across discipline borders. Invited Speakers: Renato Lemus (National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM), Brooks Pate (University of Virginia), Sergey Yurchenko (University College London)

Far-Infrared Spectroscopy

Organized by Olivier Pirali (SOLEIL Synchrotron) and Shanshan Yu (Caltech, Jet Propulsion Laboratory)

Far-infrared spectroscopy has moved from an emerging to a well-established field over the last decade. Spaceborne, airborne and ground-based telescope technology gains unprecedented views of the cold, dark regions of the interstellar medium and the wider universe. The application of synchrotron radiations and free-electron lasers has become widespread. This mini-symposium will consist of discussions on spectroscopic activities in and around the far-infrared region, arbitrarily defined from a few hundred GHz to several hundred wavenumbers. Sessions will be organized around recent instrumental development, quantitative spectroscopy, reactive species, intermolecular interactions and biomolecules, and astrophysical lab/observation studies for/with SOFIA/ALMA/Herschel. Invited Speakers: Brian Drouin (Caltech, Jet Propulsion Laboratory), Jean-François Lampin (Lille University of Science and Technology), Hiroyuki Ozeki (Toho University), Charles Schmuttenmaer (Yale University), Jean Vander Auwera (Université Libre de Bruxelles)
