Jon Hougen Memorial Award

This award supports the travel expenses of an exceptional young international spectroscopist who would otherwise be unable to attend the ISMS.

The award has been established through the generosity of Jon's family and colleagues in creating the Jon T. Hougen Memorial Award Fund, an endowed fund currently held at the University of Illinois that will support this travel award in perpetuity as a lasting tribute to Jon's legacy.

The Hougen Award will provide up to $1500 in travel and housing funds to enable the recipient to travel to the ISMS and present their research.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduate students and Ph.D.s within 4 years of the awarding of their Doctorate are eligible for the award. An extension of this time-from-doctorate may be given for time spent outside of academia, for example for family responsibilities, illness, global conflict, etc.

Application Procedure: Applicants should submit a 1-page summary of their research accomplishments. They should also solicit a 1-page letter of recommendation (same format as above) from a research advisor. The recommender should submit both PDFs using the form at https://forms.illinois.edu/sec/2127320771.

Declaration of financial need: This award is intended to be financially enabling, and the letter from the recommender should explain why the applicant will be unable to travel to the symposium without the Hougen award.

Applications are due by 5PM Central Time (US) on Wednesday, February 8. In future years, we expect the Hougen Award application and selection process to take place in December, before the opening of ISMS abstract submission.

All members of the ISMS community are invited to contribute to this fund in Jon's memory, by making a tax-deductible gift either online or by mail. Your contribution will help ensure that the annual return on the fund will be sufficient to fully support a promising young spectroscopist's travel to the ISMS each year.
